“In the early morning of January 18, we passed several large icebergs. Later, the wind intensified, its direction fluctuated between south-west and south-east. The ship began to throw from side to side. Since the water coming from the side froze on the deck and in the stables, we decided to prevent this by nailing the canvas over the gaping holes in the bulwarks. This “cold work” was entrusted to Adams and Mackay. Adams dangled on a rope loop at the side of the ship and from time to time, when the ship was tilted aboard, plunged into the water to the waist.

The air temperature was four degrees below freezing. One must think that in such conditions the flannel tennis trousers did not warm him too much. When Adams was too cold, Mackay took his place overboard. Thus, they made a pretty decent temporary bulwark, which prevented a mass of water from entering the stables.
With the same force, about 65 km / h, the wind blew until the middle of the day on January 19, when it began to gradually subside. In the northeast, a piece of blue sky appeared. The entire deck was covered with a thick layer of loose ice, and the freshwater pumps completely froze.
